For the most part, though, Santogold’s debut follows a quite different path. “L.E.S Artists” is stirring new-wave pop that builds to grand, tearful choruses reminiscent of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, while “You’ll Find a Way” and “Say Aha” are propulsive ska-pop numbers that hark back to its creator’s previous band, Bad Brains-influenced punks Stiffed. But it’s not just skilful genre-skipping to recommend this record, though: White is the rare vocalist that can sound empowered and vulnerable within the space of the same song, and it’s her force of character that places Santogold ahead of the pack. –Louis Pattison

The set list captured on this specially-priced 2CD recording includes ten songs from Life on a String, plus 2002 arrangements of earlier songs from her catalog, including ‘Let X=X’, ‘Coolsville’, ‘Strange Angels’ and the classic ‘O Superman’ – one of the great compositions of the last two decades. Recorded live at Town Hall / Sept. 19-20, 2001. Trifold digipak.Laurie Anderson scored an improbable hit in the early ‘80s with the atmospheric “O Superman,” a song that appears near the end of this exhaustive two-disc live set. Despite a new arrangement, the track sounds just as entrancing as it did 20 years ago, if only because the 90 minutes leading up to it features some of the most complex, dreamlike, and unnerving music ever produced. But given that these concerts were recorded just days after the September 11 attacks in New York, the effect is all the more chilling–just try to hold back the goose bumps when Anderson sings, “Here come the planes / They’re American planes / Made in America.” The air of intensity is palpable throughout Live at Town Hall, as Anderson pulls out vintage pieces like “Let X=X” and “Strange Angels,” each one taking new shape and meaning in the process. From 1971 Meddle is widely regarded as Pink Floyd’s first concept album, introducing the idea of a theme that can be returned to. The album features the seminal track Echoes that filled a complete side of the original vinyl release. The new Discovery version presents the original studio album, digitally remastered by James Guthrie and reissued with newly designed Digipak and a new 12 page booklet designed by Storm Thorgerson.
The ‘Discovery’ collection: 14 Remastered Studio Albums
Since 1967 Pink Floyd have produced one of the most outstanding and enduring catalogues in the history of recorded music. All 14 original Studio albums have now been painstakingly digitally remastered by James Guthrie (co-producer of The Wall), and are reissued with newly crafted packaging and booklets created by the band’s long-time artwork collaborator Storm Thorgerson.
‘Discovery’ albums are designed as an introduction to the artist, with all booklets including full album lyrics. For all that menacing, hatchet-happy growl at the beginning of Meddle‘s opener, “One of These Days,” Pink Floyd really weren’t about to “cut you into little pieces.” Meddle did, however, show that the reigning British monarchs of 1970s-era psychedelia could rip into galloping jams. It also showed what its predecessor, Atom Heart Mother, promised–that the band could excel in long, breathtaking suites that revealed strains of late-classical music, Sun Ra-inspired space explorations, and a patchwork approach to colliding sounds that together took on acid-drenched proportions. And if all that isn’t enough, “San Tropez” revealed a playful side of the band, playing footsy with loungy jazz and having good fun in the process. –Andrew Bartlett

Elmore’s 1960 hit The Sky Is Crying , a classic covered by countless blues and rock bands, came on the Fire label, as did all the other tracks on this awesome collection. His slide sears the strings as he plays that hit plus Shake Your Moneymaker; Dust My Broom; Look on Yonders Wall , and 12 more!Classic is a word tossed around so frequently and carelessly these days it’s hard to recall the time when it accurately described truly stellar songs. Well, this compilation of 16 sides by Chicago slide-guitar master Elmore James, recorded in New Orleans, Chicago, and New York City between 1959 and 1961, includes real, honest-to-god classics such as “The Sky Is Crying,” “Done Somebody Wrong,” “Shake Your Moneymaker,” and “Look Up Yonder Wall.” James’s grainy vocals and stinging guitar powerfully express pain and regret. His recording studio band, Broomdusters, sometimes with the great drummer Belton Evans present, reveals emphatic feeling in a supporting role. Only “My Bleeding Heart,” sullied by noisome horns and a general sluggishness, and “Something Inside Me,” on which an unidentified sax player wears out his welcome fast, fail the test of time. –Frank-John Hadley
