Yours Truly Angry Mob

Yours Truly Angry Mob

Yours Truly, Angry Mob is the Kaiser Chiefs’s brilliant follow-up to their debut, Employment.

Kaiser Chiefs were one the great musical success stories of 2005. Fast forward to 2007 and Kaiser Chiefs (Ricky Wilson – lead vocals), Andrew “Whitey” White (guitar), Simon Rix (bass), Nick “Peanut” Baines (keyboards) and Nick Hodgson (drums and vocals) are about to unveil their much anticipated second album.

Yours Truly, Angry Mob wields its musical might from the start in the shape of “Ruby” – an infectious single to rival anything the band have done before. “Angry Mob”, a favorite from the band’s European festival appearances last year is destined to be a universal fan favorite. “Heat Dies Down” will surely have ‘em pogoing in the aisles en masse, while the stunning “Everything Is Average Nowadays” is perhaps the thread linking Yours Truly… with its predecessor. Yours Truly, Angry Mob, as one band member has been heard to utter, “is an album full of big choruses and even bigger guitars”. Maybe so. It’s also the work of a band hitting their creative stride. All hail the Chiefs! If your previous album was a slow-burning success story, it can be hard to be expected to hit the ground running on the follow-up. Fortunately, the Kaiser Chiefs have done just that on the fantastically titled Yours Truly, Angry Mob. Like Employment, their debut and this album’s predecessor, Yours Truly… is full of radio-friendly, hook-ridden tunes that mask cunningly subversive lyrics. The Kaiser Chiefs are very much a Britpop band, which is probably why “Highroyds” opening couplet–”I remember nights out when we were young/They weren’t very good, they were rubbish”–sounds like something Jarvis Cocker would sing while being backed by the boys from Blur. And it’s this lyrical sentiment that’s carried throughout the album, much of which is satire wrapped up in potential singles. Best of all, and a perfect example of this, is “The Angry Mob,” sure to be shouted along to by exactly the people it’s targeting. It’s the rare band that can mock and judge its audience and still be loved by them, but that’s exactly what the Kaiser Chiefs have done on Yours Truly, Angry Mob. –Ted Kord

Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace

  • Foo Fighters – Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace

Having commemorated their tenth anniversary with a year-plus run commencing with In Your Honor (a double album the New York Times called an “unexpected magnum opus”), sold out rock arena shows and a toned down intimate theater trek, and a headlining gig at London’s Hyde Park for a crowd of 85,000, the question looms larger than any in the Foo Fighters’ career to date: What do they do for an encore?!? The answer comes in the form of “The Pretender,” the first single from the band’s sixth studio album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace, out on Roswell/RCA. Produced by Gil Norton, who last worked with the band on 1997′s double-platinum The Colour and The Shape (recently reissued in deluxe 10th anniversary form), Dave Grohl, bassist Nate Mendel, drummer Taylor Hawkins and guitarist Chris Shiflett have crafted a 12-track milestone that showcases and reconciles the band’s every strength and sensibility in the most complex and confident Foo Fighters album to date.

Foo Fighters

In 1997, Foo Fighters teamed with alt-rock production cornerstone Gil Norton to make their best album, The Colour and the Shape. Ten years later, they’ve regrouped with Norton for a disc that’s more sophisticated and diverse, if a tad less rockin’. The curveballs include “Stranger Things Have Happened,” a solo soul-searcher where leader Dave Grohl’s accompanied by just his acoustic guitar and a ticking metronome, and “Ballad of the Beaconsfield Miners,” an acoustic guitar duet for Grohl and guest virtuoso Kaki King. Plus “Summers End” tickles the Foos’ classic-rock fetish with a dead-on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young arrangement. There’s still enough of the intense, snarling power-pop that’s Foo Fighters’ longtime forte. “The Pretender,” “Erase/Replace,” and “Long Road to Ruin” combine sheer thrust, zeal, and melody like no other group currently on the charts. Yet the finale, “Home,” makes its clear that this is a changed band–or, at least, that Grohl’s a changed man. With only his piano for company, Grohl’s pleading voice reveals fragile layers of insecurity and loneliness as he sings “all I want is to be home.” Seems this rock & roll road warrior’s mellowed some, albeit without compromising Foo Fighters’ vitality. –Ted Drozdowski

  • JUSTICE CROSS

Justice’s monster beats, massive hooks, thunderous drums, and near-religious determination to demolish dance floors cast them in a light no contemporary can catch. The group’s US debut single, “Waters Of Nazareth” arrived in 2006 and solidified their sound: huge slabs of beats, brutal strings, and cathartic release. That record sets the stage for this, their debut full-length, boasting the already ubiquitous disco pop anthem “D.A.N.C.E.”, which features the best English children’s choir since “Another Brick In The Wall Pt. 2″.Justice is the moniker of the Paris-based production duo Gaspard Augé and Xavier de Rosnay. Their approach to crazy-quilt dance-pop hybridism is infectious, if a tad off-putting here and there. The duo rose to fame due to an MP3 single and super smart video for the excellent, kiddy-chorused house-pop number “D.A.N.C.E.” in 2007, and they soon thereafter signed to the suitably named label Banger. They manage to make really silly and fun music in a way that frequently comes off in a pretentious manner. It’s ridiculous to name your album after a symbol, especially if it’s . This is not meant derogatorily. Really. Justice does appear to be that rare breed of dance artist equally capable of stimulating the body and the mind, though neither Richard James nor the Basement Jaxx need fear this act. After just one listen to “Waters of Nazareth,” it’s very difficult to avoid wondering “how the hell did they mix and match noise and pop so beautifully” while also dancing furiously. –Mike McGonigalRarely does a European DJ/dance album hit the U.S. with as full a head of steam as this one, but after the twin jabs of the singles “Never Be Alone” and “Waters of Nazareth,” French duo Justice was poised and ready to follow with Cross. As a strong contender for the dance album of 2007, this 12-track debut shows Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Augé flexing more musical elasticity than the “dance” or “house” tags can possibly convey on their own, never mind the “French Touch” movement with which the pair is loosely and rather reductively associated. Having remixed tracks from artists as dissimilar as Britney Spears and Franz Ferdinand, the pair seems to have been building its chops for exactly this kind of resolutely defiant masterwork. From the relentless, gritty electro-bounce of opener “Genesis” and the stuttering, four-on-the-floor propulsion of “Let There Be Light,” to the children’s chorus of “D.A.N.C.E.” and the rock-indebted “DVNO,” Cross starts with a palette of house and disco beats and then throws the kitchen sink at it. The resulting amalgam boasts a tectonic range of reference without ever sacrificing de Rosnay and Augé’s slavish devotion to the fine art of the party album. –Jason Kirk
